Searchopia IE™ - Defining A Search Criteria
A Search Criteria is composed of search terms and search logic. The Search Terms are the words and phrases that you type. The Search Logic defines how the terms must exist in a file for it to be found.

Search Terms
A Word is any string of characters except for a space. Spaces represent logical operators like And/Or/Near. There are two types of words - partial and whole. A search for a partial word finds any word containing its characters, whereas a search for a whole word must match the entire word exactly, including size.
Hint: You can mix partial and whole words in a single search by turning the Whole Words option on and enclosing the partial words in quotes.
A Phrase is a string of characters in which the spaces are treated as spaces. This means that the spaces are searched for along with the other characters in the string.
Hint: Phrases are normally enclosed in quotes unless you are searching for a Single Phase.
Search Logic
1. Logical AND Search ![]()
The Logical AND Search allows you to find only those files that contain ALL the words and phrases specified in your search criteria. See Example 1
Hint: Phrases must be enclosed in quotes. The quotes will not be included in the search.
2. Logical OR Search ![]()
The Logical OR Search allows you to find all the files that contain ANY single word or phrase specified in your search criteria.
Hint: Phrases must be enclosed in quotes. The quotes will not be included in the search.
3. Proximity NEAR Search
or ![]()
The Proximity Search allows you to find the files that contain the first word or phrase in your search criteria when it is NEAR the others. See Example 2
Hint: Phrases must be enclosed in quotes. The quotes will not be included in the search.
4. Single PHRASE Search ![]()
The Single PHRASE Search allows you to find files that contain the complete phrase specified in your search criteria, including all the spaces and quotation marks. See Example 3
Hint: The phrase is NOT enclosed in quotes. Quotes and spaces are now included in the search.
5. Logical NOT Search ![]()
When the Must Not Contain option is turned on, only files that do not match the search criteria are found.
6. Combined Searches
A Combined AND/OR/NEAR/NOT Search is made possible by doing more than one search. First, you search using one logical operator. Then, you narrow subsequent searches to the files already found and use a new search criteria with a different logical operator.
Hint: The Previous List option on the List menu will let you move back one or more search levels to a previous list of found files. This allows you to repeatedly search the same list over and over again with different search criterions.
7. Case Sensitive Search
When the Case Sensitive option is turned on, all the upper and lower case characters in the search terms must match exactly as typed.
